Currently, most of our internal art team uses Maya for their modeling.  We don't intend for Sirikata to be limited to one group of modelers.  You should never be forced to adopt a new program in order to create the content you want.  While Sirikata was designed to have content come in from 3ds Max, it can be created in Maya (as well as other programs), allowing for the user to work in the environment in which they feel the most comfortable.  These articles will help content creators who use Maya prepare their models for export to 3ds Max and Sirikata.
